PAL vs NTSC in 2026: what actually matters now
Every week someone asks if a game will "work here". Short answer: on modern hardware, usually yes. Long answer, because you deserve one:
Discs (PS3 onward, Xbox 360 onward)
Most HD-era consoles are region-free for games. A PAL PS4 happily runs a US disc. The exceptions are rare and always flagged on our listings, so you never have to guess.
Cartridges and older discs
Retro is where it bites. A US SNES cart will not slot into a PAL SNES without an adapter, and PS1/PS2 discs are region-locked. That is why we default to PAL stock for Australia and label any import with its region code in bold. We do not modchip or region-unlock anything — you get the console exactly as it left the factory.
The one that still catches people
Old PAL games ran at 50Hz and some are letterboxed or slightly slower than their NTSC cousins. For 90s platformers it is barely noticeable; for a few speed-run darlings it matters. If a title is famous for a bad PAL conversion, we mention it in the description. Honesty over hype — Gary insists.
